The institution was established in 1968, it is approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India (DGCA), for conducting the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course (AME) and by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu for conducting Diploma in Automobile Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Civil Engineering. HIET is widely recognized in the Asian and African continents as a premier technical institution. Various Governments including the Governments of Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, the Common Wealth ecretariat and several aviation organizations have sponsored students to undergo courses at HIET. It has trained over 70,000 engineers and technicians. Over 50,000 of them are now working in leading organization all over the world. The institution is well equipped with basic engineering workshops like Machine shops, Automobile & Aeronautical workshops, and Electrical, Electronics, Heat power and Computer laboratories.
